What Happened?
Child Friendly Cardiff is taking a significant step forward in promoting children’s rights by launching two new training modules, both which help to support adults in their important role as Children’s Rights duty bearers. The first module focuses on Children’s Rights Impact Assessments (CRIAs), guiding professionals on what they are, why they matter, and how to effectively complete them, using the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as our guide. The second module is tailored specifically for managers, offering a comprehensive overview of children’s rights and practical steps to ensure that all teams uphold their legal responsibility. Both modules are set to roll out across all council departments, ensuring widespread engagement and impact.
Why?
These training modules are crucial for embedding a child rights approach throughout Cardiff’s local authority. The CRIA module addresses the need for systematic assessments that ensure policies and decisions respect and promote children’s rights. The managers’ module responds to a growing demand for leadership that not only understands but actively champions children’s rights. Being a Child Friendly City requires us as a local authority to ensure that every decision made considers the best interests of children, something that both modules align with.
So What?
The introduction of these training modules is expected to significantly enhance the awareness and implementation of children’s rights across Cardiff. By equipping staff and managers with the knowledge and tools to carry out CRIAs and lead with a children’s rights focus, Cardiff is laying the groundwork for long-lasting, positive change. This training will not only improve current practices but also set a standard for future initiatives, ensuring that children’s rights remain at the heart of all local authority actions and decisions
